Plastic pollution is a global problem that not only harms the environment but also has harmful effects on our health. There are global initiatives to end plastic pollution and many cities are implementing laws to restrict or ban the use of plastic bags, cups, utensils and more.  The global plastic crisis is so big that even recycling to fix it not feasible. Researchers and scientists are trying to find a solution for this global crisis by developing sustainable materials like biodegradable and recyclable bioplastic.

A group of forward-thinking designers from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College has developed a series of machines that can transform discarded seashells into a paper-like material to replace single-use plastic.

The project called Shellworks involves the use of five different machines Shelly, Sheety, Vaccy, Dippy and Drippy, to transform the crustacean shells into different objects.

All these machines will be used to extract chitin, the world's second-most abundant biopolymer, from the seafood, transforming the bioplastic solution into flat sheets of material, giving them shapes, forming 3D vessels and finally turning the material into original bioplastic solution for the recyclable purpose.

The team believes that the bioplastic they manufactured will be easily accessible and widely accepted as an alternative. (via)
