Will Yu's artwork reflects the way pandemic has impacted our lives.
From the moment we were diagnosed with the pandemic, we have adapted to survive. We learned to take care of each other. Together we found a way forward. However, the pandemic has changed how we view the world.
Will Yu, a Taiwanese artist, muses on the pandemic's consequences in his artwork WE (2021). It shows a little girl with braided hair putting on and taking off her mask, emphasizing some of the modifications we've had to make to deal with the global health issue.
The girl is represented in the artwork with a vibrant blue map of the world in the backdrop, echoing the color of the surgical mask that covers part of the girl's face, giving the scene a clinical feel.
WE is part of the artist's Finalism series, which is centered on the act of "leaving" and discovering one's potential.
The pandemic has brought with it a sense of fear and uncertainty, which has led to a demand for masks and protection. As a result, the pandemic has changed our ways of life, which is evident in Yu's oil painting.
